Understanding Knowledge Translation in Research For Research Nurses

Nurses have often been great contributors to research in low-income settings mainly as research nurses. This role mainly involves being at the frontline and conducting ethical procedures, collecting data from participants, and ensuring the effective filing of all data from the research participants. This role is the main engine of any research study, and many times nurses undergo protocol training to ensure that they understand the procedures and processes involved.

Upon completion of data collection, data processing, and dissemination are often done by the Principal Investigators and with hardly any participation of the research nurses despite being the key players in the generation of the findings. This is evidenced in many scientific conferences where there hardly any nurses present abstracts or are keynote speakers. This translates to a lack of skills among many research nurses in Africa in Knowledge translation (converting research findings into practice).

April 2023

Understanding Knowledge Translation in Research For Research Nurses

To address this gap, a one-day workshop was conducted to equip nurses with knowledge translation skills to enable them actively advance the uptake of research findings by various stakeholders. The event was organised by Global Research Nurses.

Community Engagement within Research Uptake

ARCH and Mesh worked in partnership to present this webinar series where inspiring speakers share their experiences and give their perspectives on the role of community engagement within the process of applying research to changes in health policy and practice.

December 2021

Maternal and Child Health

A review of the role of community engagement within the process of applying research to changes in health policy and practice, focusing on maternal and child health. Researchers share their experiences of the power of participatory research and engagement to improve health services and well-being in marginalised communities in Kenya and Bangladesh.

 March 2022

Mental Health

The role of community participation in healthcare policy with a focus on mental health is explored. Experts in the field share their experiences of different research methods, creative interventions and service-user activism which have worked towards inclusive solutions to mental well-being in Southern Africa and Latin America.

May 2022

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)

This webinar explores the role of community engagement when applying research to changes in health policy and practice with a focus on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Speakers share their thoughts and experiences of using participatory and deliberative processes to engage the public and facilitate inclusive policy making.

 July 2022

Sexual and Gender Rights

Researchers share their experiences of working with social movements and through activist networks to build evidence for advocacy on issues in gender, sexuality, and inequity in health.

Science Communication within Research Uptake

Different stakeholders within the research uptake cycle, such as researchers, journalists, policy makers, and advocacy organisations, are groups that shape how scientific results are communicated, interpreted, and taken up into policy and practice. For this workshop speakers share their skills and experiences in communicating scientific information.

June 2022

How to Talk to the Public About Controversial Topics in Science

This workshop teaches on what a policy brief is, including types and relevance, characteristics of a policy brief, and the structure and contents of a policy brief.

July 2022

How to Communicate with Journalists

The speaker shares insight on the reasons for discussing scientific information with the media, means of communicating with journalists, and tips for undertaking interviews.

Science Advice within Research Uptake

Teams across the globe share their experiences and strategies for promoting evidence uptake and driving action in decision-making, programme implementation and resource allocation decisions.

July 2022

Progress Towards Universal Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Services. What is the Role of Evidence in Policy and Programme Decision-making?

Diverse stakeholders share experiences and strategies for promoting evidence uptake and driving action in the WHO's Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research (SRH) policy decision-making, programme implementation and resource allocation.

Stakeholder Mapping and Engagement for Research Uptake

The ARCH programme conducted three virtual stakeholder mapping workshops in Africa, Latin America, and Asia to understand who the key stakeholders in research uptake were, why they might be interested, how important their involvement is, and how to engage with them in a way that can contribute to successful research uptake. The workshops also identified the gaps in research uptake.

March 2021

ARCH Stakeholder Mapping Report

Through the Applying Research to Policy and Practice for Health (ARCH) programme we aim to bring together researchers, policymakers, and implementers to address gaps in research uptake.
